Diwali 2025 just turned extra thrilling, and a little spooky, thanks to Maddock Films’ latest horror-comedy, Thamma.

After charming audiences with Stree and Munjya, the studio is back with another wild concoction of romance, myth, and mischief.

And if you’ve missed seeing Ayushmann Khurrana on the big screen post his vampire phase, you’re in for a treat.

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar (yes, the guy who helmed Munjya), Thamma is the kind of film that blends eerie legends with laugh-out-loud moments, a rare mix that hits just right for the festive season.

Think of it as “folklore meets first love” with a side of supernatural spice.

Check my full Thamma review here where I will tell you the pros and cons of this new chapter of MHCU featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna.

Thamma Review:

The Story Setup: A Bitter Love Story

Thamma centers on Alok (Ayushmann Khurrana), a normal, a little awkward guy whose life takes a crazy turn when he meets Tadaka (Rashmika Mandanna).

I won’t give away the most exciting twists because, believe me, there are plenty.

She is captivating, mysterious, and concealing a secret that has the power to alter everything.

Alok is soon dragged into a world of ancient folklores, cursed bloodlines, and Betaals—desi-style vampires—ruled by the terrifying Yakshaasan, who is expertly portrayed by Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

The tone of Thamma is distinctive; it doesn’t merely rely on slapstick or scare tactics.

Rather, it strikes a balance between intense feelings and unearthly suspense, leaving you both smiling and gasping. With a two-hour clock, it never stays too long.

The dialogue is sharp, the pacing is smooth, and the last twist? An authentic Diwali firecracker!

The Cast Performances: Fangs Shine and Sparks Fly

Let’s talk about performances, as Thamma excels in them.

Once again, Ayushmann Khurrana masterfully combines heart and humor.

His portrayal of Alok, who is equal parts endearing and naive, is immediately recognizable.

He is the heart of the narrative because of the warmth in his wit and the innocence in his fear.

Rashmika Mandanna is a revelation in her full-length role which can be called as her perfect Hindi debut.

She is fierce, elegant, and utterly captivating in her role as Tadaka.

Even as the shadows draw closer, you can’t help but cheer for her and Ayushmann because of their amazing chemistry.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui follows. As the vampire overlord Yakshaasan, he is a poetic representation of pure menace.

His words are dripping with depth and dread. Every frame is made more solemn by his presence.

Paresh Rawal, whose comedic timing is once again unparalleled, completes the cast.

He reminds us why he is Bollywood’s favorite “wise yet wacky” uncle by adding much-needed humor to the mayhem.

Varun Dhawan appears as Bhediya and his entry sequence is very well staged.

From his buildup to fight sequence of Bhediya vs Vampire looks great on screen!

You can tell that everyone is enjoying themselves as they work together to create a world that is equal parts funny and eerie.

What Is Effective (and What Could Have Been More Detailed)

The Pros:

Script & Direction: Aditya Sarpotdar creates a rich, multi-layered world where contemporary humor and mythology collide.

Misty landscapes, temple ruins, and moonlit rituals combine to create a truly cinematic spectacle, making it visually stunning.

The writing deftly blends romance and horror, conveying real emotion without ever taking itself too seriously.

Music & Visual Effects: Sachin-Jigar’s soundtrack is a true gem.

You’ll hum the upbeat folk-pop rhythm of the title track all week, and the background score expertly strikes a balance between playfulness and tension.

Another triumph is the visual effects, which are elegant, well-executed, and captivating without being overdone.

Heart & Humor: Thamma’s heart is what makes it unique.

There is a tenderness that shines through the laughter and the frights.

The whole family can enjoy the spooky fun, the jokes come naturally, and the emotions seem genuine.

Cameos and setup for future of MHCU: The horror comedy universe is always perfect with it references, cameos and easter eggs.

You can tell after movie watching that this MHCU universe has many more things to offer for which audience will be seated!

The Cons:

Yes, it isn’t flawless. Particularly in the middle, some subplots seem a little hurried.

Furthermore, most viewers will be too entertained to mind the film’s loose reinterpretation of ancient legends, even though mythology buffs may take issue with it.

Nevertheless, those are only minor hiccups in an exciting, smooth ride.

The Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars

A daring new chapter in Maddock Films’ horror comedy universe, Thamma skillfully blends Indian folklore with universal emotions, making it more than just another horror-comedy of MHCU.

Watch for post credit where we get new film of MHCU -Shakti Shalini featuring Saiyaara actress Aneet Padda.

It’s a clever, intense, and heartfelt Diwali treat that makes you laugh and feel something.

Therefore, don’t wait for the OTT release if you’re in the mood for something new this holiday season that slays, swoons, and frightens.

Thamma deserves to be seen on the big screen, so gather your courage, your partner, and some popcorn.
